One of the most ancient landmarks of Mumbai - ?The Gateway of India?, constructed by British architect George Wittet in 1924. It acted as a flag for far off voyagers to recognize the Indian Territory. Its dome-shaped and magnificent architecture is what makes it one of the most popular landmarks in the city. The Gateway of India combines both Hindu and Muslim architecture. The dome architecture was an inspiration taken from the Islamic culture and the decorations and carvings on the structure are inspiration from Hindu culture. Facing this, there is Taj hotel, which is one among the majestically built hotels in India.
Initially known as the 'Borivali National Park', this park is clearly one of the most famous national parks in the country. Every year, there are more than 2 million people visiting Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This park is home to various species of deer, and, snakes porcupines. Other than these, the park has antelopes and leopards as well. In addition to the flora and the fauna, the 2400 years old Kanheri caves also exist within the compound of the park. The park acts as 'the lungs of the city' as it has tremendous amount of greenery, in contrast to the rest of the city.
Siddhivinayak temple is unquestionably the richest temple of India, which was constructed in 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil. It was actually built because Deubai had a very strong feeling about the plight of barren women. From a small unimportant temple, the temple has today evolved into a huge one. The temple dedicated to the Hindu Lord Ganesha, the God of initiation. There are eight manifestations of Lord Ganesha, also known as Ashtavinayak, all of which are beautiful carved in the temple. The central statue is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, and the inner roof of the temple is plated with pure gold.
Also, known as bandstand, this place is a walkway in west Bandra, a popular hangout spot and a big park. There is an amphitheater setup at the end of the promenade, which serves as a venue for concerts and other performances. At one end of bandstand, there is a section dedicated to honorable actors and actresses from Bollywood. This place has numerous statues and handprints. The place is privately owned by UTV Motion pictures. Bandstand is the newest seaside spot for recreation in Mumbai and has many other places to visit nearby like Chow patty, Juhu beach and the Marine drive.
The Bandra fort was built and designed by the Portuguese in 1640 as a watchtower in Mahim bay. This fort is also known as Castella de Aguada and a lot of Bollywood films like 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' have been shot here. Bandra sea link is a cable-stayed bridge. It links Bandra to Worli and the central Mumbai. Other than acting as a life saver for people stuck in traffic, this beautifully designed bridge is a treat to the eyes.
Founded in 1942, this theater is one of Mumbai's most famous and prestigious theaters. In a city that is home to the Bollywood film industry, theaters like this are the reason that the ancient art of theater still holds its roots strong even after establishment of many advanced ways of storytelling. The theater is privately owned by the Kapoor family, a family that has devoted 4 generations to the art of acting and storytelling. The best time to visit is around November when they conduct the annual Theater Festival.
This is probably the only railway station which is listed as a World Heritage Monument. It was known as the Victoria terminus initially when it was constructed by the English architect Frederick William Stevens after the reigning queen. The construction commenced in 1878 and it took more than 10 years to complete. The architecture of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station is inspired from Italian Gothic architecture as well as that of dome-shaped Mughal buildings. No wonder, this creation reflects one of the best examples of railway and civil engineering coming together and is a structure worth a visit.
